Fashion Fall

School is taking up most of my time - but I'm loving it. Fall is particularly beautiful this year. The whole of September was practically rain free. And I've learned how to use knitting machines, so there'll be a gargantuan knitted wrap around my neck (preferably in a Lanvin blue tone) ASAP. Fit for fight.

Saw a really amazing art exhibition at the Nobel Peace Center today. Photographer Linda Bournane Engelberth has documented asylum seekers in Europe. She focused on the excruciating waiting time that these people have to endure due to the Dublin II convention (meaning that your application can only be processed in the first country you seek asylum). I really felt she manage to capture the insecurity, boredom and fear. There were pictures from Norway, Greece and Rome. Pretty mind blowing. I didn't know that much about the Dublin II convention, but apparently all your identification is being saved when seeking asylum for the first time and people even concider burning off their prints just so they can seek asylum in a second country. Most asylum seekers enter Europe by either Italy or Greece - very few, or close to no one get their asylum application granted.

The songs are full of Gothic imagery, of fairytale flights of fantasy, and although much has been read into her lyrics, Florence says it’s usually simple. “Everything is about boys!” she laughs. “The whole album is about love – and pain. People see my lyrics as crazy, but to me it’s an honest, heartfelt album. I didn’t set out to be wacky. I just want it to be emotive.”

Summer Apathy

School is way over and I had never expected my first year to go so well. Now I’m genuinely looking forward to starting classes in August. Bought some curriculum, fresh Pilot drawing pens (marquer à dessin) and colorful sketch books made of Japanese paper. Me like. A lot.

But alas, apathy has struck me. Big time. And I had so many plans for this summer. Garments to sew, books to read. But there was this amazing weather for a week or so and all I could think about was shakerato, bathing in the fjord and sandwiches with shrimp and aïoli. Then the weather turned sour and I got sick (possibly from dancing too much in skimpy outfits?). But it’s still only July.

I’m starting my summer job tomorrow. Four weeks full-time. I’m sure it’ll go swell. I’ll just make loads of articles on ice cream.

And in less than two weeks I’ll be heading North with my boyfriend. He has a cabin there, by the beautiful coastline and we’ll do nothing but fish, eat and read for five days. Then I’ll be heading back to work some more.

Things I would love to do before summer ends:

1. Read Cormac McCarthy’s Blood Meiridian.
2. See the Norway Says exhibition at the National Gallery of Design.
3. Find a basket for my new blue bicycle.
4. Sew a shirt dress of the beautiful cotton fabric I got at a yard sale. And possible some summer shorts of cotton canvas.
5. Bicycle around Oslo in said shirt dress.
6. Read french (i.e. Harry Potter et Les Reliques de la Mort) and take notes.

With my Gmail. Love, love, love getting e-mail. Hate, hate, hate the fact that I’m totally and utterly addicted to checking at least five-six times a day. I don’t need coffee in the morning. I have never smoked. But I HAVE to check my e-mail. Sometimes I think I’m insane.

Went to Barcelona with my wonderful class. We stayed in the weirdest apartment ever, which looked like a set for a reality show with a zen rock floor and a little wall fountain, open (!) bathroom and a constant smell of sewage. Nice! But apart from the strange stuff it was dancing in bars, strawberry mojitos, Gaudì, MACBA and tapas, tapas tapas. I love my class. My class rocks.

I don't know if it's such a good thing to drink cuba libres on a Sunday, but honestly I don't care. It tastes good. And my boyfriend gave me an Oreo dream cake for Valentine's Day (which we really don't celebrate, but cake is always welcome in my house), so everything is pretty sweet right now. I got back from New York on Monday. The trip was wonderful. Hanging out with amazing friends and seeing the city in winter was great. Magnolia Bakery was visited, in addition to glorious El Beit café in W. Burg, the Nylon offices and Ruff Club. All in all, a super mini-vacation!

Pretty, pretty, pretty. Long day. School (introduction to the new project; we get to curate a gallery and build fun models out of white cardboard), then over to FIN where the team planned Oslo Fashion Week and sent out samples to stores from the new collection. And sewed the things that came back from the producers a bit... funny. Home now. Watching Six Feet Under with my glorious room mates. New York next week! Yay. I'm leaving on Wednesday and will be back on Sunday. Staying at a friend's house the whole trip and we'll just hang out, eat gnocchi, devour the works at MoMA and Brooklyn Museum, dance, drink colorful drinks with bugly names and have a splendid time. In general.

Snowy January - a year of new beginnings

My best friend looked over at me yesterday with a discontent frown (we were sitting in the living room, buried under mountains of blankets and pillows on the couch, so I didn't quite grasp the reason for the sadface) - "you haven't updated your blog, since, like forever!". I stared back at her. Feeling the guilty conscious increase. "Hmm. I've been busy". I never intended this blog thing to be something many people paid any attention too, and frankly, I don't think there are (I've never managed to install one of those fancy-schmanzy number counters). But for myself it's important to have this little vent. And I'm so extremely glad that my friends are reading it, and not to mention anxious to figure out what's up with me. Happyface. I know I work too much at times, but I'm slowly and surely managing my time in a better way. I'm no longer stressed (well, almost never) and I feel in general more comfortable with everything. The Christmas holidays were great. I managed to relax. I have a huge design task due on Friday and I'm a bit nervous, to say the least. A few days ago it started snowing. For an entire day it just kept falling down huge chunks of white paper-looking snowflakes, big as brownies. Everything got covered in white and the ambiance got all peaceful. I love snow. It has an amazing calming effect on the scenery. I promise to update more often. Even though it's just a few lines or a photo or two. Or something about elephants. Or bunnies. Or both.

Christmas Time

I cant' believe how fast December went by this year. When I was a kid December was torture. Absolute torture. And now Christmas Eve is over already. It was great, though. I really got into the christmas spirit for once and made cranberry jam with honey, orange and cinnamon for my family while listening to Tchaikovsky's Nutcracker Ballet. I got homemade chocolate chip cookies, a moomin cup and a six month subscription to MONOCLE from my wonderful boyfriend and also lots of great books and not to mention two other Moomin cups from friends! I'm so happy. Christmas is great. Happy holidays!

Lazy saturday

My second design project isn't due until January, so I'm more or less in vacation mode already. Don't know if that's such a good idea considering my project will be extremely time consuming once I'm started. We're supposed to explore the borderlines between fashion and art. Intense.

Anyways, I've spent the day with Karima, taken a trip aroundt town in the rain, hung out at new bookstore which had a 25 % sale on books and (and bought tooooo many of them), goofed around with my new TRIA markers and listened to Robert Plant and Allison Krauss while drinking coffee. The MUJI cinnamon and mandaring scented candle burning merrily, reminding me that christmas isn't far away. I just got my salary so I've been splurging a bit. On books, mostly. But also on a pink bow tie and my favorite YSL pinkpinkpink lipstick. Winter is wonderful.

Hmmm. A whole month since last post, but I've been working on my first design task . Add two jobs on top of that and the result is one exhausted little girl. Pwehhh. But now I'm all done.

Yay. Tonight we're having a massive 90s party in the apartment. I'm overexited. I'll be wearing a black dress with chinese markings and a cream colored pleather jacket with a high colar - and of course soak my hair in gel and have on small blue sunglasses on the tip of my nose. Matrix style. All of our friends are bringing their old Buffalos and stuff like that. And I found all my old posters (why did I keep them, really?) of Spice Girls, All Saints and Backstreet Boys in my mom's attic. Sweeet. There'll be slow dance to Mariah Carey's "Hero" and drinking to "California Love". Damn right.

Vacation is only a few weeks away and I counted just 16 whole days left at school. Wow. I have an interview in about an hour so I have to run soon. Here are some of my favorite pictures right now. Nice and simple.

Fantastic Fall

Fall in Norway is pretty much amazing. No doubt. This week has been good, even though I've been missing my boyfriend quite a bit (he's visiting his best friend in Vancouver). Sigh. Thursday was spent doing some spontanious dancing at a birthday party held at a new bar in Oslo called Fisk & Vilt (roughly translated into Fish & Game (the sign was donated by a closing fish dealer)). Lots of good friends and nice music. Britney remixes and cheap cava. Nice. Yesterday we went out to The Villa after a very intimate pre-party (just me and Iselin drinking rum and coke and doing some couch dancing while playing air-keytar). We met up with some friends and since our other friend, Jon (love you, sweetie), was tending the bar we got a very nice price on drinks. Dangerous. We went over to Fisk & Vilt and danced some more. Then we went home and ate pizza. Mmmmm. Today, Karima and I took a walk in the gorgeous weather (the colors were amazing) and saw a great gallery exhibition by Kohei Yoshiyuki called "The Park". Then we went home, cleaned the entire house and baked apple and cinnamon cupcakes. Yum. My plan for tonight is doing nothing but stuffing my face with cupcakes and drinking ginger and honey tea.

Status Quo: Fall Edition

Today I sewed half of a shirt dress. I think it will look good when it's done, but there was a great amount of cursing involved and threats of trowing different sewing machines out the window and down four floors. Stupid overlock machine. Temper, temper.

I love my art and design classes at school and life is so much more relaxed these days. I actually have time off! How about that? I'm currently reading James Frey, whom I've already fallen in love with. The books are nothing but incredible and I would encourage everyone to look at A Million Little Pieces. I can't remember the last time a book moved me like that one. Harsh and brutal and heartbreaking. But beautiful. Truly and utterly beautiful.

I like Oslo more and more, which may seem like a strange statement concidering I've lived here my whole life. But there's something about this new change of pace. Less stress and therefore more time to actually walk around and look at things. New gallery openings, fall leaves, the Royal Castle in the morning with business men walking by with Newsweek under their arms, hot coffee in one hand, briefcase in the others.

Buying art books because I actually have to for a change, not just because I'm bored of my other curriculum and need creative stimuli. Drinking beer with friends on weekdays, discovering the wonder that is Twin Peaks and painting my fingernails white. Clean as snow. Missing my best friend that's in India. Planning trip to Paris to visit another girlfriend. Looking forward to red wine and seeing the Seine at night. Dancing.

All in all. Fall is good. I even like the rain.

I must have seen this documentary ten times. Loïc Prigent is amazing and his portrait of Marc Jacobs is so intimate and real that it's difficult not to be charmed to death. Seeing Jacobs fuzzing about, sewing a hem, thinking, visualizing, seeing new contemporary art for inspiration, working in Paris, then New York, traveling to Tokyo for a LV party in a bubble dome, is more or less insane. I can't imagine having such a stressful lifestyle and still it's something that's appealing more and more to me. See this film. It will make you want to create something.

Martin Margiela Madness

Went to Brussels with my boyfriend last weekend since his ambassador father lives there. Very posh and very fun. His family is so down to earth and it's so strange to parade around their massive house with industrial kitchen and five living rooms. It's like living in a hotel, which is pretty sweet. Our plan was to see Metronomy, but we got drunk at a NATO dinner instead. Fabulous. But we did go to Antwerpen, which I had been looking forward to.

Antwerpen is renowned for its fashion. Antwerp Royal Academy of Fine Arts is the birth place of The Antwerp Six (Dirk Bikkembergs, Dries Van Noten, Ann Demeulemeester, Walter Von Beirendonck, Dirk Van Saene and Martin Margiela) who revolutionized fashion in the 80s.

Martin Margiela was replaced by Marina Yee after a short period of time, but he has remained an extremely important figure in contemporary fashion design. An exhibition on Martin Margiela opened at MoMu the same weekend we were there and it was so amazing seeing his ideas and finished work up close. The label turns 20 this year and the exhibition is in a way a guide through Maison Martin Margiela's different themes and approaches to fashion.

Margiela is known for his deconstructivist approach to fashion and oftens reuses old materials and garments in his creations. He fusions tailoring with conceptual thinking and it was fascinating to explore his unique communication policy (Margiela opposes the star status of the designer and no images of Margiela is distributed), presentations and events and not to mention store design.

All in all, a wonderful exhibit and a great weekend trip to a city that more people should travel too.

Hurrah for me, for the bunneh, for all the wonderful and exciting things in the world, for drinking to much soda late in the night even though one have to get up early in the morning to go to college and learn embroidery and take a flight to Bergen at 1 PM to go to the Ekko Festival and see Booka Shade and The Whitest Boy Alive and Radioclit and drink Gin Tonic and dancedancedance and realize that Norway is actually a pretty sweet country to live in and fall asleep happily.

So, I'm back home again. Actually it's been two weeks, but they've just been so intense, working with the new magazine and not to mention the Øya Festival. I got to interview Clipse which was amazing and the after parties we hosted went really well. All the artists (Strip Steve, Les Petites Pilous, The Wave Pictures, Metronomy, Best Fwends, Hot!Hot!Hot!, The Whitest Boy Alive, Luca C, David E. Sugar, Jerry Bouthier and Andrea Gorgeriono) were all so great and really enjoyed the shows. I'm so pleased. I don't know if I can manage to summarize the stay in New York with just a few words, so I'll post some photos from the trip instead.

Finally here. Actually been in the city since sunday, but it's just been crazy the last few days, so I haven't really been able to take it all in. New York is always overwhelming.

Right now I'm sitting in a café in Williamsburg named El Beit. They probably have the nicest backyard I've ever seen, but due to the intense humidity I'm sitting inside in the cool airconditioned air, drinking an iced latte and writing. I'm really comfy in this huge leather chair in the corner, sitting people watching.

Tonight is 4th of July so I'm going out with a really cute girl named Jessica to Ruff Club at the Annex on Orchard Street. I'm excited about the fireworks. The weather is nice, Brooklyn is amazing; all is well.

New York is a magical place.

On sunday I'm leaving for the Hove Festival. It's gonna be great. Great contrast to Greece, but that's the charm. Camping life, beer, dancing, friends.

I went to the tivoli (is it called that?) with my sisters last friday. It was a great laugh. The weather was amazing and we just goofed around eating hot dogs, took rides and eavesdropped on teenage romances. But, to my astonishment I realized that I got scared of quite a few things.

1. Kids in large quantities freek me out. I'm serious. They're dead scary. All the sugar turns them into some un-human hyperactive machines. They were all frothing at the mouth clutching stuffed animals. Ok, maybe not all of them, but still.

I have to face it. I'm getting old. I'll turn 21 in less than two weeks. But fortunately I'll be at a beach in Greece eating watermelon. I think that'll take some of the stress of.

It's not that strange really, with a name like Chanel Iman you're destined to do great things. And there's no doubt that this eighteen-year-old girl will do just that. I mean, look at her. Since her runway debut in 2006 she's walked close to one hundred shows and even graced the cover of Vogue (May 07). She has both African and Korean blood running through her veins and is born and raised in Atlanta. And it's this quirky combination that makes Chanel special. Her signature is winking at a member of the audience from the runway and it's rumoured that she's winked at Anna Wintour herself. Cheeky.

The last week has been hectic. Really hectic. We're working on two issues of the magazine simultaniously in addition to the special Øya Festival edition. Ex-hau-sting.

Oh, well, in three weeks time I'll be in Greece with my boyfriend. I can't even begin to describe how much I'm looking forward to it. Cold white wine, greek salad, beach life, sun, reading, watermelon. And I'll be there on my birthday too! I'm celebrating my 21st on June 16. Btw, I made the cupcakes in the photo for my friend Liv's birthday in march. They look like some sort of cancer. Anyhuww, tasted good, though.

Turning 21 is something I'm looking forward to. This summer will be 'the summer I was 21', and I have to say that New York has a teensy weensy bit to do with my excitement. It's actually dawning on me now how strange and weird and wonderful and exciting and strange (I said that, right?) it'll be to celebrate my 21st summer in New York. So weird. So so weird.

Things I'm longing to do:
- Have my usual picnic in Central Park with loads of deli goodies such as Snapple, parma ham, rye bread, good cheese, cupcakes from Magnolia and fresh magazines.
- Study design (yes, I'm such a geek, but I can't wait!)
- Drink cheap drinks and then go dancing.
- Live in Brooklyn (first time!)

But still, Death Cab was my teenage band #1 and I can't even tell you how many times I must have listened to "Transatlantiscism" lying under the covers innocently kissing by boyfriend. Hmm. The weather has been so good lately that we had a little picnic last weekend. It was great. Just a few of us eating strawberries and fizzy candy. Then the freaking birds came and shat all over my cashmere cardigan that Iselin was borrowing. That’s karma for you. I got really annoyed. But some Mango Madness Snapple cheered me up, not surprisingly.

Standing outside a luxury hot dog stand (it really was). Marius is at the ATM. I’m tired. And hungry. Half asleep on my own shoulder.

Weird guy with pony tail and leather jacket: Well, hello there. What are you having?
Me: Um, I don't know yet.
Weird guy: I know what you're having. You’re having a reindeer hot dog. I’m ordering two.
Me: Ah, really you don’t have too, I’m fine.
Weird guy: No no, I insist.
Me: No, I insist. I don’t really like reindeer.
Weird guy: (A bit annoyed now, ignoring my last comment) I’ll have two reindeer hot dogs!
Hot dog lady: Sorry, we’re out.
Weird guy: Oh. (Weird guy walks away without ordering anything else.)

Marius and I bought hot dogs with chili and garlic and walked home. And then slept forever. At least until 11 am. My mattress was a bit hard.

Berrrgen pt. 2

Pwoahh. Lot of stress today. We just started working on the new magazines (yes, plural) since it will be too stressfull to manage work during the holidays. Hence, we have three new issues on our hands and we just sent the newest one to the printers. I took three Aspirin today and tomorrow I'm definitely calling my doctor. My back is killing me. And I'm only 20! Jeez, I'm turning into a little old lady already. Brrrr.

Anyway, I meant to update on Bergen a little sooner, but due to super nice weather and work (ok, I promise I won't complain anymore) I haven't really found the time. But right now I'm lying on the couch doing nothing but eating strawberries and sporting a handsome face mask (Clinique). I look really sick. It's pale green.

Bergen was beautiful. It's probably the prettiest town in Norway. Situated beneath towering mountains it is packed with San Fransicoesque streets and small wooden houses. Pastel ones as well!

The Fix was amazing. Marius and I went backstage at the venue and it was a bit surreal to actually see all our favorite musicians in one cramped, Norwegian room, drinking Norwegian beer. Weird. Flosstradamus played a super cool, unpretentious set, and Matt & Kim blew the roof of the house. Marius and I had bought these colored techno light glasses at this crap store earlier that day, and we threw them on stage and Matt & Kim actually wore them for an entire song. Then they fell off.

I met Matt & Kim last year at the Øya Festival here in Oslo and they were such genuine people. We met again backstage and when they actually remembered me it just confirmed how extremely nice they truly are. Oh, and when they played "Lightspeed" I was screaming so loud that the girl beside me shhh'ed me. At a concert!

And look at the nice flyer! It's probably one of the coolest one I've seen so far with the neon orange little paper ribbon around the "waist" of the other flyers. Every artist had their own. Marius saved it for me because he said it was so me. And he is right, of course. As always.

Berrrgen pt. 1

Bergen was amazing, as always. Seven hours on the train flew by, astonishingly enough. I got all national romantic whilst on the train and ohh'ed and ahh'ed every time we went by a particularily big mountain with snow covers or a water fall. Or saw some sheep. I adopted the enthusiasm of a pack of Japanese tourists and felt rather embarrassed when one of the other passengers actually asked me to be a bit quiet. I sat in silence the remainder of the trip reading my wonderful book, No One Belongs Here More Than You by Miranda July. It was actually very nice.

I also got to read all my new glossy magazines that I haven't had the chance to even open due to deadline stress. Arghhh. Hence, the fresh pages of Cover, Nylon, Acne Paper and Jalouse were consumed with great interest. Nom Nom Nom. My iPod was scorching hot when I reached Bergen and these were definitely the artists most played: Sebastien Tellier, Foals, Flosstradamus, Cut Copy, The Whitest Boy Alive and of course Bonnie Tyler (Total Eclipse of the Heart, anyone?) Foh' shizz. Airplanes are for losers.

(More on Bergen is coming soooon. I just have to be outside right now. It's rrrreallly warm and we're going barbecuing. And I'll bring my plaid pastel picnic blanket! All is good.)

The Fix

I'm going to Bergen tomorrow, which lies on the west coast of Norway. It rains a lot. But that doesn't matter, because one of my best friends, Marius, goes to university there and I can't wait to see him. We're going to The Fix to see Matt & Kim, among others. It'll be great! I'm looking forward to dancing, eating and drinking coffee in one of Norway's prettiest cities. Marius mentioned something about amazing midnight hot dogs. Hillary Clinton annoys me. It's difficult to pinpoint, but there's definitely something out of sync with that woman. Why, oh, why can't she just give it a rest. Irritating woman. McCain will demolish her. Even though he can't raise his arms further than his chest. Huh.

Politics exite me. And the US Presidential Campaign has never been this intriguing. I wish I could vote, but sadly I can not. Damn my Norwegian citizenship.

If I could, I would vote for Obama. I think it's naive to think that the next president of the US is something one should take for granted if you don't live in America. I actually think Obama could make a difference and I have all my fingers and toes crossed that he'll win the nomination. Hillary is a hag.

Btw, I just love this poster by Shepard Fairey. Fairey is a renowned illustrator and graphic designer which a few might recognize as the man behind the Obey Giant. Because of Obey, he actually got named as one the most influential artists today by the Institute of Contemporary Art in Boston. Pretty nice.

Oh, if Only I had an Ice Cream Van

I went to the U.S. Embassy yesterday to get my visa for the trip. I was kind of dreading it since I was certain something had to go wrong with all the gazillion different papers I needed to bring along with $130 ("no change!"), 68 kr in postage and a 5 cm x 5 cm photo. Interestingly enough I actually got my visa without that much fuss. I've always envisioned the inside of the U.S. Embassy as some real fancy prominent place with marble and columns and mahogany. But, alas. It actually looked a bit like a post office. Disappointing. Mahhh.

Ah, well. I got my visa. I've booked flight tickets (direct flight home, yayy!) and lodging for the whole trip (I'll be staying in Brooklyn) and the sun is shining. Wonderful. And today I discovered the new LA Riots remix of Heartsrevolution's 'Switchblade'. And I like it! Sort of. It's definitely growing on me.

What's even better is that Heartsrevolution has their own ice cream van. If I had my own ice cream van I would eat pistachio ice cream all day. Nom Nom.

Spring has finally arrived and we actually hung out in the park today. After an incredibly long winter it was quite surreal to be barbecuing and relaxing outside. Nice change. Then we went to see the new Opera house. I was not expecting to be so amazed, but wooow, it’s really quite shocking how pretty it looks. Snøhetta has done a great job making the house as interactive as possible. With all the people walking around it resembles a gigantic ant hill.

In another way it looks like a big ship floating through water. We got sort of a Titanic-sinking-into-the-ocean-feeling, though, coming down from the big thing. Scary. And there’s so many gaps! We saw tens of people tripping. Next thing you know there’ll be blood all over the Opera. Gross. Except from that, the Opera looked great. Splendid.

Oh, I should really get to work. But my head is hurting so bad that It's hard to think about anything too serious. Hence, I write about small funny things instead. Yeaaah. The wonderful writer Ms. Spinach over at Fashion is Spinach wrote about a cute little character a while ago: She adores the little childhood hero named Eloise, star of the iconic children's book by Kay Thompson and illustrated by Hilary Knight.

The book is about a little girl living in New York's famous Plaza Hotel. "She's wildly creative, absolutely quirky, highly imaginative, very opinionated and completely adorable", according to Ms. Spinach. And judging by the scanned photos she definitely looks like my kind of fashion hero, too. I adore the Kleenex-box-on-the-head-look. I'm betting that it'll be major for fall:)

New Retail

I'm fascinated by retail design. Store interior excites me. I spend an unreasonable amount of time in clothes stores (well, it's my job!) and good interior design is definitely the cherry on the icing for me.

Visiting Japan was a highlight, of course, which is something I'll write about in another post. I could fill an entire blog about Japan. And speaking of good interior and Japan, the wonderful publishing house of Phaidon has just released an amazing book on retail design called "New Retail". It features some of the worlds most innovative stores and the photos are gorgeous. The Prada building (designed by Herzog and de Meuron) and the Hermés store in Tokyo are featured. Obviously. Contemporary architecture rules. Yum.

Since I was a little girl I've always loved Moomin, the little fairy tale troll in white. The characters of the show are all so precious, from the overly ambitious Sniff (the brown dog-like thing) to the philosophic vagabond Snufkin (Snusmumriken in Norwegian), sweet Snorkmaiden, Moomin's girlfriend with the golden bangs and foot ring, the scary Hattifatteners and of course Little My, who is so small that she can sit in the Moomi family's milk jug. And who could forget Stinky, the small black creature who cheats and steals but never kills. Moomin is the best children television there is. Period. And Tove Jansson's drawings are amazing. Enjoy.

The enfant terrible of Danish fashion, Henrik Vibskov, is also mentioned of course.

PS: Söderstam was also featured in the prestigious book ”Sample” a few years back. The book featured 100 up-and-coming designers and was written by Harriet Quick, current fashion features director of Vogue, among others. It’s defintely worth a look. I got quite sad when I realized that the wonderful Swedish designer Patrik Söderstam will stop designing garments and focus mainly on t-shirt design (sold exclusively in Japan, sigh). His look has been known to be synonymous with avant-garde shapes and the classic Söderstam silhuette is based around skinny jeans with padded calves paired with oversized tops. It was this look that caught my attention a few years ago. Söderstam illuminated such an interesting view on fashion and joined the ranks with fellow silhuette masters Yohji Yamamoto and Martin Margiela.

Yes, I know I'm a girl, but who cares? Really? Menswear is such a fascinating field. The focus on details in modern menswear design is amazing and the people who claim that womenswear have the upper hand should check out the likes of Siv Støldal, Dries van Noten and Victor Glemaud. But back to Söderstam:

"My aesthetic recipie is the play with extreme proportions, futuristic detailing, trash and sex, and a whole lot of otherness", says Söderstam about his designs.

And I couldn't have said it better myself. It's bit grotesque. A bit weird. But it's definitely innovative, and oh, so fascinating. Patrik is my hero. He will be sorely missed.

Spring Bliss

Oh, my head's a little shaky. Yesterday was a rather eventful day. It sounds really lame in one way but I had a great time just walking around in a part of town that I'm rarely in. I've lived in Oslo my whole life and when I manage to find places that are actually new to me, I can't help walking around with a smile on my face. Finding new small thrift stores and vegetable shops is almost as nice as birthdays. Almost.

The weather was great so I had ice cream in the sun with my boyfriend before I met up with a girlfriend of mine and drank rasberry juice down by the dockside. The evening got filled with great indian food (from this super quirky restaurant with bamboo huts inside and colorful strings of lighting), beers and laughs at a friends apartment before a party with great co-workers. We ended up at Spasibar where I danced too long in too high heels. When I got home I put my leather boots in the sink to clean off the dirt. Idiot. Leather don't mesh to good with large amounts of water.

Ah, well. It was a good night. Followed by a not so good morning. My head was killing me. Ouch. The plans for today are to finish reading Norwegian Wood by Haruki Murakami and then maybe bake brownies. Maybe.

Dreaming of Russia

Yes yes. I know that I just boasted about my New York tour, but I have to admit that I'm also dreaming of going to Russia. Not now, obviously. My budget is rather limited at the moment. I've always had some wild fantasy about learning Russian, then taking up Russian literature so I could be an expert in Nabokov and Tolstoj. Maybe that'll happen in a few years. For now, I'll just dream.
